Four films on disability to be shown by BBC

The BBC have announces a series of films over the coming months on disability. One of these follows the Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton's brother who has cerebral palsy and wants to be a racing driver too, and another a couple with cerebral palsy about to have their second baby.

The executive producer of the series says:

"This season is about ordinary disabled people dealing with the same everyday challenges that everyone faces – leaving home, choosing a career, raising a family."

Programmes will be on BBC1 and Radio Five Live starting with Nic Hamilton on 6 March.

Its a shame that all four will be broadcast at 10.35pm and not earlier in the schedules.

Recent articles on Conductive Education in journals

Today on Facebook I saw a note by Andrew Sutton that a new article on Conductive Education had been published in an academic journal so I followed the link given and it is now in the Virtual Library's catalogue on  Conduction's website. (see below)

Andrew also asked when there had last been an article on Conductive Education published in a journal.

 Recent Advances in Conductive Education which aimed to encourage reports of developments worldwide and  spread information about the practice of Conductive Education ceased publication in 2008 and no other journal devoted to the subject exists.

There have been numerous ephemeral reports in newspapers and magazines recently but those in academic journals that I am aware of are:

Articles often come from academic institutions where there is encouragement to publish, or as a result of research, and I wonder how many such projects are yet to be written up and published. If you know of any, again, please let me know.

Playing against time - life with Parkinson's disease

I mentioned this programme on Facebook yesterday and then watched it myself in the evening.

It was a very interesting report of one person's determination to carry on living her life as she always had done, writing and performing her music all over Europe. Barabara Thompson , a celebrated saxophonist has had Parkinson's disease for twelve years and has managed it with drugs, determination and the support of her husband. The documentary film makers followed her over a period of five years and there was footage of her playing and writing her music, managing her 'down' time and discussing her treatment with a Parkinson's nurse and doctors. There was no mention of her trying any other means of controlling her PD, such as physiotherapy or Conductive Education.

There was a wonderful scene of her playing with  a group of people with PD who were singing a song about having the disease, composed by a member of the group.

 She is still performing when she can despite the difficulty of not knowing when she will be physically able to and lives in hope that a better treatment will soon be available.

More comment on Masters degree in Conductive Education

I have responded to say what  the latest position relating to all qualifications for Conductive Education appears to be. The end of the Wolverhampton course and the possible start of another in Birmingham at the National Institute of Conductive Education are the latest developments I can find.

As far as I am aware there is still no Masters degree up and running.

After neglecting the Depository of the virtual Library  for the past weeks I have just added several papers. These have been sent to me over the past couple of days and provided the push I needed to get more material up.

A report by Rony Schenker of the recent conference on Conductive Education held in Shanghai last December is now in the Depository alongside its Chinese version translated by Claire Cheng. These make three items about China, two of them  in English. It doesn't sound a lot but considering most information about the development of CE in China is on the Internet  in Mandarin, having two recent items in English is quite a coup.  If you know of others, please do send therm to me.

Getting these into the right format for uploading has taken me quite a while today -  and a lot of careful work. Each had to be redone several times and my patience wore a bit thin more than once! But in the end  -  success. Hooray!

After doing this I checked my email and a friend had sent me a link to a video. I have just watched this and realised that I am quite happy to get frustrated, do things again and again  and  not work like the man in the film.
