New IT service in Conductive Education

I have just heard today about a new website and service in Conductive Education.

http://conductiveit.com/

This has been set up by Ben Foulger, a conductor with great experience of IT. He is available to help with all IT aspects of Conductive Education and has already received a contract to provide a website for one CE organisation.

I struggle with the technical aspects of communicating and imagine most of us do, so this development is most welcome. Now we have someone who knows about such things, someone  to  consult, help and provide. I am sure I will be using his services at some stage.

Do go and have a look at the website to see what Ben has already done and what he can offer.

Adding links to websites

Today I was asked for my permission to include a link to my blog on a website. Although it was very nice to be asked, there was no need as the site is in the public domain and anyone can link to it, for any purpose.

I am also happy for anyone to quote from it or use the information as long as they indicate where the information came from.

This made me think about just what is up on the Internet  that I am involved with:

 There is:

  • this blog
  • my Virtual Library Catalogue and Document Depository
  • Conductive Education Press and the 4 books it has published.

The blog was started in 2008,  Conductive Education Press in 2009, and the Virtual Library in 2010

Not bad for a start!

Snippets and memories about Maria Hari on the Internet

After including the bibliography of Maria Hari in the Conduction website Depository  at

I thought it might be worth searching the Internet for other shorter virtual pieces about her. The list below is the result which is  rather disappointing as there are few contributors.

I was not able to find anything on the Peto Institute website at all.

If I have missed anything, please do let me know and then I can include it.

Conductive Education: do we want to save the history and knowledge?

This morning on the Today programme, BBC Radio 4, there was an item on archives and preservation of knowledge. This was prompted by the news that the poet,Wendy Pope, had sold her archive to the British Library and led to a wider discussion about preserving documents in the electronic age, the difficulties thereof due to sheer volume, and how important librarians and archivists were to the organisation and management of such collections in today's 'digital abundance'.

Naturally it made me think of Conductive Education and what was being done to save its history, development and practice. The National Library aimed to fufill this role as far as it was possible whilst I was Librarian, collecting centre brochures, reports, press cuttings, reports etc, but I would think maintaining the collection in this way will have been very difficult if not impossible during the past two years.

Maintaining this blog, reporting and recording events, answering enquiries is my small contribution to establishing a record, a history, the facts of what is happening in the CE world. Another resource is the virtual library, the virtual catalogue which includes items on the Internet which are available to those who want to investigate, analyse and discuss. Unfortunately one disadvantage of the Internet is the 'disappearance' of items due to broken links, deletion or being moved to new locations as has happened with some of the items I have found for the Virtual Catalogue, but with limited resources it is not possible to track everything down.

 I do my best.

One question you may ask is does anyone really care? Other than me, of course. If Conductive Education is to have a future surely it must have a recorded past to learn from and build on?

I would like to offer everyone the chance to present their papers, documents, writings to me for inclusion in the Repository on http://www.e-conduction.org/  or to keep with other material I am collecting here in my 'office'.

Let's do our best to save and preserve knowledge for those who will follow us in the years to come.

Checking cookies

Even though I use my computer regularly and connect to the Internet to obtain information and maintain my blogs, I am not very good with any of the technical aspects of the hardware and software. Friends who are a bit more savvy than me often have to help out with advice and help. A piece in my local paper by Dave Pinwell about cookies has proved very useful too, and I would like to pass on the information.

One aspect I have had trouble understanding is the cookies that are small files which get put on  the PC without permission or notification when I visit websites. How this can happen I don't know, all I know is that it does.

These cookies collect details of browsing activity and sometimes contain login, passwords and other details needed to make repeat visits to a site. These are not dangerous unless they get into the wrong hands, and the information gained could be obtained by a hacker whether cookies are held or not. So a good firewall and security protection are vital. Having these will permit proper use of cookies and any unwanted intrusion will be prevented.

You can block all cookies but this may prevent you accessing sites that you want to, so it will be worth checking your privacy levels. It is possible to delete cookies before you close the computer down and I do this regularly. You need to right click on the Internet icon, choose properties and then click on  delete for brwsing history to remove all those cookies you do not want on your computer.

Thanks, Dave.

New search engine to come

Today it has been announced that a new British search engine will be launched in May.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1160667/Revolutionary-British-search-engine-important-Google.html

This will be different from other search engines such as Google as :

...the London-born physicist claims his website 'Wolfram Alpha' can
understand what you are looking for and calculate a single precise answer.
So in theory it will be able to answer questions such as 'What is the location of
Timbuktu?', 'How many protons are in the hydrogen atom?' and 'Where is the
International Space Station?'
'There will be one simple input field that gives access to a huge system, with trillions of pieces of curated data and millions of lines of algorithms,' Professor Wolfram said.
This ability to process natural language, understanding everyday speech as well as
computer-programming language, could prove to be a leap forward in how humans
interact with computers.

The stuff of science fiction, but this should make more accurate searching possible. When it is launched I will give it a go and let you know how I get on.
