New website for the Peto Institute ?

Yesterday I  needed to check the date of a Peto Institute publication and clicked on the link for the publications page that I gave a few weeks ago.

To my dismay there was nothing there and so I put Peto Institute into Google again and found what looks like a new site under construction using the previous URL. It does look very crisp and clear with colourful pictures across the top, but at present there are no pages for the library and publications that I could find.

 I will keep checking and when I find this information up again on the Internet, I will let you know.

Change of name

It is now five months since the launch of the New Conductive Education Library at

and I think that the Library can not be considered 'new' anymore.

Today I have changed its name to The Virtual Conductive Education Library. It is still  a catalogue of items on the Internet, the URL remains the same and the content has not been altered.

 I will continue to add items as I find them.

Directories lost - and found again

Today I received an email informing me that the links to the Directories on the right-hand side of this blog were no longer working. On investigation I discovered that when I changed the URL for the blog a couple of months ago I didn't change the links to the directories accordingly.

This has now been corrected and each list is now available again at the click of the mouse.

If anyone else has had trouble accessing this information, please accept my apologies for this oversight.

Israelis due to start new course for conductors in September

I have just read  on Andrew's blog

 about the new course, set up by Tsad Kadima, for training conductors in Israel which is due to start later in the year. What an exciting development this is for Israel and may prove a model for other countries to follow.

 Hearty congratulations to all concerned in setting this up and I will look forward to hearing more about it in the future.

Over the years I have sent material and references to Rony Schenker at Tsad Kadima and asssume these  will now be part of a collection of materials built up over time, making a valuable resource for the students. I hope that the virtual catalogue I am developing at

Conductive Education starts in Vietnam

Today I received an email sending me a link to the  newsletter of Childrens Hope in Action, Vietnam.

This led me to a brief piece about the work of Stephanie Driver, a British conductor who is volunteering there. She has been working on this project for 5 months. several groups with children have ben set up and she  is working hard at introducing Conductive Education to Vietnam. Let us hope that this is a case of small beginnings leading to bigger and better things.

Research meeting in Newcastle

Over the past few weeks there have been rumours about a meeting on research in Conductive Education and what was discussed. There is a short report on this now available on the Internet at

Conductive Education publications for sale

Today I discovered a list of books and pamphlets for sale at Hari Maria Library in the Peto Institute, Budapest.

The majority of these are in  Hungarian but there are eighteen titles in English and a few in German. Other subjects such as the education system in Hungary and neurology are also included.

Fire alarm

How safe are libraries? 

We all rely on libraries being there when we want them and believe they are a safe depository of books, journals, papers etc. In the main they are, as precautions are taken to avoid losses due to damage such as fire. But...

In the past the great library in Alexandria was burnt down http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_of_Alexandria
and, incidentally, a library in commemoration was  recently been opened there in 2002.

and several years ago, if I remember correctly  the library in the Goethe Institute in Germany suffered a lot of damage due to a fire. Anything lost in such circumstances can be irreplaceable especially if it is old and possibly the only known copy.

On the grapevine I have heard that there was a fire due to an electrical fault in the National Library of Conductive Education at NICE in Birmingham this week. This has happened before but the fire was quickly put out so there was  no losses of stock (or harm to individuals). At the time it was suggested that the library contents be scanned in case of any further fire, but this would have been an enormous and expensive task, so nothing came of it.

Rumour says that the fire was worse this time and it was necessary to throw a bookcase (or just its contents) out a window! Whether this is the complete story or just the story growing as it was passed on, I don't know, but it is extremely worrying as most of the collection is unique and not available anywhere else. 

The  material on the Internet listed in the virtual catalogue at http://www.virtualcelibrary.blogspot.com/ cannot be destroyed in the same way but is still vulnerable to the whims of the Internet machine and could be taken down or moved. At least it is there.

Perhaps we should all look to the safety of our personal collections of valuable materials in Conductive Education (and other areas) and consider their future.

By accident I heard the last fifteen minutes of a radio programme yesterday morning, and it gave me much to think about. To quote the BBC website:

Research and Evaluation is biggest section in New Conductive Education Library

I have just added some more items to the Research section of the virtual catalogue at

It is by far the biggest subject in the catalogue at the moment with 44 items, 17 of which are free to access.

The range of material is growing by date, language and topic. One of those added today is an article published in 2010  by Susan Effgen and others, another the first to be added in Chinese (with an English abstract).

Are you having a laugh? TV and disability

 A programme on the portrayal of disability over the past 50 years (with the above title) will be broadcast on  BBC2, at 9pm on Friday 25 June. According to the schedule it will be :

A humorous and irreverent look at the way disability has been portrayed on TV over the last 50 years, narrated by David Walliams. From Sandy in Crossroads to Brenda in The Office, we'll see how the subject has been done well, how it's been done badly and how box ticking and the odd token wheelchair has helped this process. We look at the astonishing journey from Ironside to Cast Offs, Monty Python to The Office and Little Britain.

Whether it is humourous, remains to be seen.

Enquiries - the long, the short and the unclear

Ever since I have been involved in Conductive Education I have had lots of enquiries from lots of different people at all sorts of levels, from the general to the specific. These I have answered to the best of my ability and most respond with thanks for the information. Most people have told me who they are, what they are doing and why they are asking the questions. Some don't. Only this week I had an enquiry about biographies of Andras Peto and was only given the name of the enquirer, nothing else, but I answered, as I always do. At no time has it occurred to me to question any query as to its validity.

This week I have been following the postings on Susie Mallet's and Andrew Sutton's blogs about an enquiry which turned up in Susie's spam box and I too wondered if it was a hoax.

Then I get the same message in my spam and now understand her reaction and  puzzlement. Usually anyone doing research at an academic level mentions exactly what they intend to investigate in their  enquiry,(as well as  including where they are studying etc.) and asks  specific questions(s), which is what I would expect from a student working at that level.
 This emailer mentions he is a Master's student at a named university but also adds that he is "Working on a school project I am doing research on conductive education and my focus is CE furniture". Perhaps he means that his research is being carried out in a school nearby which is offering CE and has the furniture,  otherwise 'school project' and 'masterate' don't really go together in my book, and sounds very odd. Or perhaps that is not the case. There may be a language problem here and if so, clarification would be helpful. I hope that the enquirer writes to all of us to explain further so we can understand his request fully.

Adopt a book

I was talking to a friend this morning about my visit to the British Library and realised I had forgotten to post a link to BL's adopt a book scheme.

Conservation of the books held by the Library is a very important part of its work and a scheme has been set up for the public to help financially with this, and enjoy a variety of opportunities to discover more about the Library.

It is possible to choose a book to adopt from a list available on the website and I intend to select one for myself when I managed to decide which title to adopt!

I 

A really big library

Today I have visited the British Library in London, where I have never been before. This is the National library of the UK and one of the largest research libraries in the world,  holding over 150 million items in all formats - books, journals, newspapers, film, prints etc. In the middle of the building is a four-storey glass tower containing the King's Library, with 65,000 printed volumes along with other pamphlets, manuscripts and maps collected by King George III between 1763 and 1820.

I have become involved in the creation of a new library (nothing to do with Conductive Education) and was visiting this institution to gain advice which will be extremely useful.

The building is fairly new and was designed Colin St John Wilson in the late 1960s. It took over twenty years to build ( including four levels below ground) and came in seriously over budget. Although not very attractive to look at it, is quite impressive as it is enormous. Much  as one would expect with all its holdings. What is really wonderful, is the fact that access to  this material is free to all. Not a lot of things are these days. It has regular exhibitions and currently has one on maps which can be visited free until 19 September.

Hungarian violinist on Desert Island Discs

Today I heard Desert Island Discs whilst driving. This is a radio programme, created in 1942, where a celebrity chooses 8  records they would like to have with them if ever shipwrecked on a desert island. The interviewer asks questions about the persons' life and why they have chosen their seven pieces of music. These people come from all walks of life and have included politicians, actors, writers, musicians, pop stars. The guest today was Gyorgy Pauk, the Hungarian violinist who talked about his childhood in the Budapest ghetto during the Nazi occupation of World War II, his eventual escape to the West and his musical career after that..

Schools for Parents

I have just received the following Google alert, as Scope has updated its website.

Scope, a charity working for the disabled in the UK has created a network of Schools for Parents that offer various Conductive Education Services. A charity was set up by parents of cerebral palsied children in the 1950s to support and care for those with cerebral palsy and it was called the Spastics Society. In the 1990s it became involved in Conductive Education but this was not developed  and sustained as suggested at the time. It has now changed its name to Scope  and over the past few years has gradually widened  its support to include all disabled people and their families. A network of Schools for Parents has been created over the years  that offers various Conductive Education Services.   A list of these can be found on their website at

Twenty-six schools are listed alphabetically by name and not geographically. These are a mixed collection and consist of centres operating for some years, e.g. The Rainbow Centre, STEPS Leicestershire Conductive Education Centre, The London Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy  and some part of established special schools e.g Percy Hedley, Villa Real, Horton Lodge. along with small centres such as the Norfolk School for Parents.

Some centres have conductors and some offer the principles of Conductive Education, one even says that the staff have been trained in the Peto method, but not where or how. This makes it difficult to understand exactly what is on offer, but  I am sure any parent wishing to find CE for his/her child would follow up on this information and find out more about each School using the contact details given  and probably making a visit.

Review of New Conductive Education Library

As it is just over a month since I started posting items on the virtual catalogue at

I thought it might be worth reviewing how the catalogue has grown and look at the number of visitors to the site.

I am pleased to say that since early April, 108 items have been entered in the catalogue under 8 different subjects and 794 visitors have been recorded. A  few comments have been made, all very positive.

 Initially I included only items that were freely available to all but am now also putting up the locations for those needing payment to view. I know this can be frustrating for those who hope to access the material immediately, at no cost, but including them does at least flag up their existence and potential use. Some academic libraries do allow public access for reference purposes (in the UK at least) so it would be worth while contacting a university near you if you wish to track down any article.

There are quite a number in the pipeline to be posted and I am checking the Internet regularly for items to add. If you know of any that I may have missed or be unaware of, please do let me know.

Top 40 bloggers

Yesterday in The Times Magazine an article was published listing the 40 bloggers that everyone is talking about. Written by Ben Machell and Killian Fox, it  covered subjects which included fashion, technology, motherhood, food, politics, family, literature, media and news. One woman  has even become a professional blogger and earns her living from it.

Changes to New Conductive Education Library

I realised this afternoon that I had posted  a draft collection of blogs on the New Conductive Education Library blog by mistake. This has now been rectified, and I hope that I will receive suggestions for further additions.

New additions to virtual catalogue

Several changes and additions have been made to the virtual catalogue today on the New Conductive Education Library blog.

References concerning Conductive Education with adults have been added to the virtual catalogue today. Only a few of Susie Masllet's posts have been included as clicking on the link will lead you to her labels list where it is possible to access 25 posts on her work with adults.

A list of blogs has also been posted and these have been divided into Information blogs and parent blogs to reflect the different contents.

A link to a list of Conductive Education newsletters has also been added to the righ hand side of the blog.

'Making the statistic' in Conductive Education

I have received an enquiry asking where statistics on the number of children with cerebral palsy receiving/received Conductive Education can be found. Well, as far as I know there are none. Individual providers may well keep their own for administrative purposes and to include them in Annual Reports, but these are not made available in an obvious public way or collated by anyone.

 The Peto Institute did produce some statistics quite a while ago, a copy of which is in the National Conductive Education Library, and Maria Hari often talked about 'making the statistic', including them in her early presentations. These, of course, are now way out of date.

I referred the enquirer to the National Library of Conductive Education where it may be possible to find some figures in student dissertations, conference proceedings or research articles. Quite a time consuming process.

How useful they can be, I am not sure, but if anyone is willing to send me any figures they know of, I will try and produce an overall picture and put it on this blog.

Bibliographies on New Conductive Education Library

A list of bibliographies found on the Internet has just been posted on the New Conductive Education Library site ( see link on right hand side).

This list is divided into two sections; one, a list  of individuals work and the second a list by subject. This second list consists of lists compiled by me over the years and published on the Foundation for Conductive Education's website. Hard copies  should still be available in the National Liibrary. 

Even though the Foundation's old website has been withdrawn now, these are still available on a web archive. Please note the dates. Some were compiled more than ten years ago and need updating but  make a useful starting place.

The New Conductive Education Library

Gradually over the years documents, articles, reviews etc on Conductive Education have been posted on the Internet and I thought it might be useful to bring these together in a 'virtual' catalogue. This catalogue will include all such items that can be tracked down.

Format 
As I do not have the relevant software or expertise in devising my own, I have started this catalogue in a blog format which is easy to use  for me, the compiler, and you, the user. This may change at a later date.

Arrangement
Items are arranged by subject, 'classified', using the scheme I devised whilst Librarian at the Foundation for Conductive Education, and include all known bibliographic details where possible. There is a list of subjects on the right-hand side, just click to access items in that area.

Please note that none of the items will be evaluated for quality. That is a job for readers: it is not the role of a library. Inclusion in this catalogue indicates solely their existence on the Internet.

Conductive Education Classic no.8

Akos, K., ed. (1975) Scientific Studies on Conductive Pedagogy. Budapest: Conductors' College.

This book was published in 1975 by the Institute for Conductive Education of the Motor Disabled Conductor's College ( now the Peto Institute), edited by Károly Ákos and translated by Peter Szoke. It was the first one in English.

This is not a very well known text and why it was produced I do not know, but perhaps there is a clue in the introduction by Hári Maria. She had read papers at meetings and conferences in the West since the 1960s and might have felt that she had not been fully understood. In the introduction she says:

The understanding of conductive pedagogy, just like that of many other disciplines, is often impeded by the enforcement of inadequate notions...The following papers are modest initiatives aimed at the clarification of the ideas of conductive pedagogy. The individual topics have been selected with regard to the aspects most frequently encountered according to experience...Our only objective is to promote the understanding of conductive pedagogy.

Famous writers who are also librarians

I have been sent an item by Susie Mallett about Librarians entitled Librarian literature - top ten books written by librarians, which was taken from a newsletter, The Avid Reader produced by Abe Books.

This list is very interesting. It includes the well known librarian Philip Larkin, plus others not so well-known. In fact I did not know that Madeleine L'Engle, Ann Tyler and Jorge Luis Borges had been librarians. Missing from the list are John Braine, Lewis Carroll, Marcel Proust and Benjamin Franklin who could easily have been included.

What a wonderful collection of people who have achieved so much in very different ways and as I cannot really claim that writing this blog makes me a writer in quite the same way, I am very pleased to be associated with them as a librarian too.

More changes to US centre list

I have been sent some more changes for the US listing of centres by Kasey, and these have now been made.

I was quite surprised to discover that several centres were no longer operating - Beginning Steps to Independence in California, The Jenny Rose Center in Pennsylvania, and The GRACE Center in South Carolina, but new ones are being set up - Center for Developmental Differences in Virginia and Brighter Beginnings through Conductive Education in Ohio. It is a shame that those who have worked so hard to open, run and maintain CE services have to close them down, especially when the services have been available for several years.

The Human Library - and understanding each other

What is it?

As I see it, it is a vehicle for those who wish to understand other people's alternative points of view

On the website it says:

The Human Library is an innovative method designed to promote dialogue, reduce
prejudices and encourage understanding.The main characteristics of the project are to be found in its simplicity and positive approach. In it’s initial form the Human Library is a mobile library set up as a space for dialogue and interaction. Visitors to the Human Library are given the opportunity to speak informally with “people on loan”; this latter group being extremely varied in age, sex and cultural background. The Human Library enables groups to break stereotypes by challenging the most common prejudices in a positive and humorous manner. It is a concrete, easily transferable and affordable way of promoting tolerance and understanding.

Events have been staged all over the world since 2000 with a large number in Hungary and a few in the UK.

The Human Library will be featured on BBC Radio 4 on March 15th at 11 am. and be available via the Internet afterwards. This should clarify things somewhat as Sandi Toskvig experiences the process.

Such an event for Conductive Education might help understanding and promote knowledge people might even find out that they agree with each other and can work together in the future.

Also last night I ended up thinking of Conductive Education again - is it taking over my life, I wondered!

On BBC4 there was a

Documentary telling the story of what happened to blues music on its journey
from the southern states of America to the heart of British pop and rock culture...

This looked at the way the Blues had come to the UK, the difficulties in communication for the Blues singers (such as Muddy Waters, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee), the differences in culture between segregated America and non-segregated UK, the way the British groups eventually developed it and moved on.

All aspects that have affected many other 'transfers' and certainly have something in common with the spread of CE outside Hungary.

English website for Peto Institute - is this new?

I have just discovered that the Peto Institute has a new English version of its website which looks very good, clean and fresh with a white background. I have no idea how long it has been up on the Internet.

I have had a look around but was unable to find a list of publications and information on ordering these.

The introductory paragraph to the Library section says

Funds from the European Union and the National Development Plan in the frame of
the Human Resources Development Operational Programme have made the
refurbishment of the Mária Hári Library and Regional Resource Centre possible.

The Library holds thirty thousand volumes on a variety of subjects, not just Conductive Education. A brief description of its contents given.

The piece finishes with

A newsroom, a study, light and comfortable rooms for readers and a children’s
corner are expecting visitors day by day.

I am not sure if this means the library is now open to all and not just the Institute's staff and students. Perhaps someone will confirm it for me.

A museum devoted to the history of Conductive Education and Maria Hari's life is also on the first floor. Certainly worth a visit if open access is possible, if you are ever in Budapest.

A surprising year

It is twelve months to the day since I left the Foundation for Conductive Education and the National Library of Conductive Education.

I felt sad and angry. Angry that the Library would no longer be a living library as there would be no-one with the time and expertise to search, find, beg for ,and add material to it. Keep it growing. As far as I know those assigned to looking after it have other responsibilities and therefore little time, if not none at all, to devote to it. Shame. The systems I put in place mean that basic services of issuing and returning items can be offered to the service users, students and staff at the Foundation. It is the only Library in Conductive Education that is open access (I know that the opening hours have been reduced to term time only by appointment) and applications for new membership not being accepted. Access is possible but not in the way it was. Shame.

Soldiering on

I felt sad as I thought that after eighteen years plus in Conductive Education I was leaving it and taking my knowledge with me. I did not think I would be able to keep up this blog, that it would be impossible without the Library around me, but I have managed it and hope to continue. A number of people have written to me with enquiries which I have responded to and the number of hits, now 10,487 as I write this, has been quite satisfying with an average of 200 a week.

Just do it

More time can now be spent on preserving the knowledge and information on Conductive Education through publishing and I am part of the Conductive Education Press publishing house. www.cepress.org The first book, Just Do It, came out in December and sales have been steady. There are plans for several more books, so its future is looking bright and exciting.

The support of several people over the first six months helped enormously. This meant so much and encouraged me to stick with Conductive Education, determined to work for it in new (if unpaid!) ways.

An unexpected anniversary present

I started preparing this posting a week or so ago and since then I have had a surprising communication which means this extra paragraph. I received an email informing me that I had been nominated and accepted for the award of Honorary Conductor to be presented at the World Congress in Hong Kong later this year. Apparently a letter had been sent through the post in December 2009, and I had not received it, but a copy of this from Professor Schaffhauser, written on behalf of the Andras Peto Institute of Conductive Education and Conductors’ College Senate, has just arrived. Naturally this was completely unexpected and left me at sixes and sevens, as they say. Of course I was delighted to accept. I am now waiting for further information and may go to Hong Kong. I did go there as a child and have some happy, if slightly vague, memories of the trip.

It just goes to show how life can change in a very short time - and I wonder what will the next twelve month bring!
　
　

Photographs of Conductive Education go on show

Is this a first?

I have just read a news report of an exhibition of photographs taken by professionals at a Conductive Education centre in the UK.

The Megan Baker House Photographic Exhibition opened in Worcester Cathedral yesterday with photos of the participants and their families taken during sessions at the Centre. It will remain there until Sunday 21 March.

It is hoped that the exhibition may move to other venues.

I am not aware of any other such ventures, so please let me know if there are any, or have been any.
