Another home for CE centres posting on Conductive World blog
As the posting on Conductive World about parents establishing CE centres was such a comprehensive and interesting statement, and may become 'lost' as other postings are made on the blog, I have now added it to the Depository on Conduction's website and it can be found at

Lists of CE Centres
Over the past couple of weeks I have been trying to catch up with all the changes and updates for my centre lists and am almost there!
Then today I see that Andrew Sutton has posted a blog about centres in response to a question that he has been asked. The enquirer wanted to know if there was a list of centres founded by parents. He gives a detailed explanation about how this is impossible to do, covering a bit of CE history in the process, and referred to my lists.
http://www.conductive-world.info/2012/11/parents-found-ce-centres.html
This lists have been compiled mainly by searching the Internet. The only criterion for including a centre is the fact that a conductor is employed there. Such centres are then arranged in the list by country with as much contact information as possible. Some of the centres do include a little history about their origins, but this detail is not a factor in the arrangement of the lists, as Andrew has explained.
Occasionally I will get an email informing me of the establishment of a new centre, changes in contact details of a centre, and also the closure of a centre. Using this information and what information I find when I search, I update the lists regularly, keeping them as accurate as possible.
If your centre is not on my list, has changed its address, phone number, email etc please do let me know. If you know of any centre no longer operating, tell me that too. Also I would love to hear from any conductor who has set up their own provisions or consultancies that are not listed, so I can keep that list up to date too.
All the lists can be found in the right hand column of this blog - just click on the one you want.

First review for Andras Peto
The first review for András
Pető appeared in The Budapest Times on Friday and this has now gone up on the newspapers website at:
http://www.budapesttimes.hu/2012/11/21/enigmatic-miracle-man-helped-the-incurable/
The editor has made it a feature article with some pictures.
The review includes a brief account of the history of Conductive Education's discovery by the West, particularly the UK and an overview of the book's contents.
Copies of the book can be obtained by clicking on the cover in the right hand column of this blog or from

The editor has made it a feature article with some pictures.
The review includes a brief account of the history of Conductive Education's discovery by the West, particularly the UK and an overview of the book's contents.
It was also very gratifying to read:The editors of András Pető have produced a compilation consisting of memories of colleagues and others who knew him at different times, notes and letters written by Pető himself, obituaries following his death in 1967 and a selection of overviews. What emerges cannot – even in the editors’ opinion – be regarded as clear-cut or in any way final in terms of fully understanding Pető and his thinking. Nevertheless, certain themes shine through.
Its editors, who are also its compilers, should be congratulated for giving the wider world an opportunity to ponder about the enigma known as András Pető, who, without ever fully explaining how, positively affected the lives of thousands of people who otherwise were considered “hopeless cases”.

New initiative for Group Work
On Thursday I went to a meeting organised by Norman Perrin of Paces Sheffield (UK) for people interested in the future of Conductive Education and what could be done working together.
Centre managers, conductors and Conductive Education press were represented, contributing to a discussion about how it might be possible to work together, present a stronger louder voice to obtain funding, influence government policy - and just keep going!
Another meeting is planned for early in the new year. It will be interesting to see how things develop.
If you are interested in learning more and joining the group, please contact rayhohn@gmail.com or normanperrin@pacessheffield.org.uk

Doing a project? New book available to help
I have found out about a new book for those doing a research project . This is A Beginner's Guide to Doing Your Education Research Project by Mike Lambert and more can be found out about the book and its author at
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beginners-Guide-Education-Research-Project/dp/0857029819/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1350480170&sr=1-1
I know students can sometimes struggle with doing this part of their course and it can be quite intimidating. In this book all aspects of doing a research project are covered by simple explanations and helpful suggestions. Planning, doing, writing up, choosing the subject, completing the literature review, for example are all covered.
If I was still working in an academic library I would be suggesting this to students to borrow - or even buy.
More can be found out about the book and its author at

More about the new András Pető book
Whilst in Hong Kong for the World Congress on Conductive Education in December 2009 it ocurred to me that the little that was known about András Pető was scattered around in various different places. Why not bring it all together in a book? For the last eighteen months we have been doing just that and along the way managed to get three previously unpublished papers and facsimiles of a exam booklet and poems by Pető for inclusion in the book. These were the icing on the cake!
Getting all this collected, edited and ready for publication took longer than expected and publication a fortnight ago of András Pető was a day of celebration for Conductive Education Press.
Copies of this are now being read and comments coming in. Yesterday Susie Mallett blogged her thoughts about it which can be read at
and says her favourite piece is the one by Júlia Dévai , which was specially written for the book. (Júlia also very kindly allowed us to reproduce the exam booklet and poems from her personal archive.) Her piece is my favourite too. It brings alive the time when Pető's conductive pedagogy was slowly emerging, in great detail, a fascinating account.
I wonder what other readers of the book are deciding are their favourites.
Please do write and let us know.

András Pető book resume now in Portuguese
Word is spreading about the new book, András Pető, and a Portuguese translation of the blurb on the back of the book can be found on Letitia Kuerten's blog at http://educacaocondutiva.blogspot.co.uk/
See below:
Copies of the book can be orered from http://www.blurb.co.uk/bookstore/detail/3575875
Thanks very much, Letitia, for spreading the word in this way.
There may be more of such translations to come, and I will blog any that I receive.
See below:

New book on Conductive Education available from today
I am very pleased to announce that a new book has been published by Conductive Education Press. This is entitled András Pető and can be found at http://www.blurb.co.uk/bookstore/detail/3575875
A brief description of this book is as follows:
With Forewords by Judit Forrai, Jo Lebeer and Reuven FeuersteinAndrás Pető was a healer. In difficult and tumultuous circumstances in post-War Hungary, out of a personal practice of movement therapy with paralysed children and adults, he developed a pedagogic method from which modern-day 'Conductive Education' proudly traces its origins. But who was he? What did he actually do? Indeed, what was his method?Surprisingly little has been generally known about András Pető, even amongst his most ardent followers. In his life he cultivated an aura of mystery; in death he became a myth. This book offers personal recollections from close associates and colleagues, some previously published, some specially written for this publication, along with a range of attempts to sum up and understand his life and work. Originals were written in German, Hungarian and English. Here they are presented in English. Also here are detailed course-notes for his students, written at the pivotal time that his movement therapy was emerging as conductive movement pedagogy, plus a short collection of his poems that reveal so rawly some of his own mental anguish. Written in Hungarian and German respectively, these too are presented here in English translation, along with facsimiles of their originals. This book should help disperse some of the myth around András Pető, so that its readers may begin to create their own critical appreciation of who he was and what he did. It is hoped that it will also help readers question and challenge what they already understand about András Pető and his work, and how this relates to present-day practices and the invocation of his name. This book is no final statement. The field of Pető Studies awaits further, extensive cultivation

More items going in the Virtual Catalogue
I am now back to adding material to the virtual catalogue of Conductive Education which can be found at http://www.e-conduction.org/?page_id=115
It is good to get back to doing 'library' tasks again after spending much of my time on Conductive Education Press projects and dealing with other personal issues.
There are now nearly 400 items in the catalogue and I do have a list of things, built up over the past few months, which should increase that quite a bit. These consist of papers, conference reports, brochures etc. I believe that a new journal will be published in November and that will go in too if its available via the Internet.
If you are aware of anything new going up, or about to, on the Internet, please do let me know. I do regular searches for such things but may have missed something.

Adding links to websites
Today I was asked for my permission to include a link to my blog on a website. Although it was very nice to be asked, there was no need as the site is in the public domain and anyone can link to it, for any purpose.
I am also happy for anyone to quote from it or use the information as long as they indicate where the information came from.
There is:
- this blog
- my Virtual Library Catalogue and Document Depository
- Conductive Education Press and the 4 books it has published.
The blog was started in 2008, Conductive Education Press in 2009, and the Virtual Library in 2010
Not bad for a start!

Startling, but possibly good news
Today I had the usual alerts for news items on not only Conductive Education but also cerebral palsy. Usually the cp ones tend to be about fundraising for various operations and therapies and plucky Jack or Jill can now ride a bike etc.
http://galvestondailynews.com/story/336210
It reports that scientists have found a way to overcome cerebral palsy in rabbits and are looking to establish the same method is safe for humans to try. The reporter writes:
Before human trials can begin, researchers must determine if the nanoparticle in this study is safe for humans, particularly children whose brains are developing.
There’s also the question of how long doctors have before cerebral palsy is irreversible in children. In most cases, cerebral palsy is diagnosed by the age of 2, but if newborns can be diagnosed and treated immediately, Kannan’s therapy might be invaluable to those young lives
It may also be used for other conditions:
The study’s scientists already anticipate pairing the treatment with stem cell therapy to regenerate damaged nerve tissue in the brain.
Not only would this help newborns with cerebral palsy, but could also help people with other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis
There is much more to do which will take a number of years, I would think, but does show how medical research is developing to give hope.

Two new publications on Conductive Education
The postman has been busy this week pushing parcels through my letterbox and I have been very pleased to receive copies of two new publications on Conductive Education for Conduction's library.
The first is the proceedings of the Peto und Inklusion Kongress held 9-10 March 2012 in Rosenheim, Germany. This is a wonderful, colourful production including a detailed list of presentations, the presentations made, plus pictures of those presenting and those taking part in the podium discussions. A very good record of the event for future reference.
Referencing this has been quite difficult as the authors/editors are not clear, but the following should enable you to track it down or contact info@fortschritt-rosenheim.de
Fortschritt Rosenheim e.V and Bundesverband der Koduktoren e.V (2012) Pető und Inklusion Kongress Rosenheim: dokumentation zum Kongress. Rosenheim: Fortschritt Rosenheime.V
An online version of the proceedings is also available at http://www.petoe-und-inklusion.de/pdfs/kongress_dokumentation_2012_06_10.pdf
The second is a chapter in a book produced by the Bliss Foundation in Hungary. This chapter relates Dévai Júlia's experiences of working with Pető from 1947 to 1952 when his system was getting started and the Institute being established. An edited and annotated English version of this will appear in András Pető, the next publication of Conductive Education Press - due out very soon.
Copies of this book can be obtained from the Bliss Foundation www.bliss.org.hu
Dévai, Júlia (2012) Egyszer volt, s ma is van: a sokarcú Pető – A konduktív nevelés kezdetei. In Kálmán, Z., ed. Negyedszázad a kommunikáció bűvöletében. Budapest: Bliss Alapítvány, pp.73-101.
Having two items published almost at the same time is unusual in Conductive Education and whilst increasing the number of things in Conduction's Library they also contribute to the growing number of publications on Conductive Education generally.
It is interesting to note that both of these have been 'self published', that is not produced by a recognised 'official' publisher and is no doubt a sign of the current financial times.
Let's hope we can look forward to more appearing in 2012.

Trouble searching the Internet?
We all use the well-known search engines such as Google, Bing, Ask Jeeves etc to search the Internet. Today after a conversation about search engines I decided to see whether it was possible to get list(s) of what is available to use.
After putting in my request to Google I found a number of lists.
Here are a few, there are quite a number of others.
http://www.thesearchenginelist.com/

http://www.searchenginecolossus.com/ (for international search engines, arranged by country)

http://www.thesearchenginelist.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_search_engines
http://www.searchenginecolossus.com/ (for international search engines, arranged by country)
These lists include an amazing number of search engines on a variety of topics, from the law, to jobs, to blogs, to games for example and also have metasearch engines, such as Dogpile, and Zuula which will search up to sixteen other engines for you.
One that wasn't included was one I used to use a couple of years ago to winkle out obscure pieces on Conductive Education. This was called Bananaslug and I was reminded about it this morning by Andrew.
It can be found at http://www.bananaslug.com/ and is called a long tail search engine as it takes random words you select and uses them to find hits on a particular subject. For example, you could choose Conductive Education as your subject and add random words from one of a number of categories listed on the site, e.g. emotions or first names for instance, to make a search.
I will have to investigate as many of these as I can and see what I can find. If you do the same, please do let me know of any items of particular interest that you consider should be included in the virtual Catalogue on http://www.e-conduction.org/

What is Conductive Education?
Today I received a Google Alert for Conductive Education which led me to a piece on CE produced by a legal firm in the US.
This is quite a long explanation of Conductive Education written in question and answer format for parents. It started well by saying that CE was not a therapy or a treatment as so many of such pieces do, what CE can do, how it is carried out by trained conductors, for example, but went on to make the common mistake of listing the five principles as the basis of CE.
It seems to include many of the factors you would find if you did a search on the Internet to find out what CE is, and there are a large variety of explanations available to choose from. Some okay, most not terribly good and some downright inaccurate.
Have a look and see what you think.

Sign of the times?
I have been collecting news items ready for the next list and come across one about the Steps Centre in Leicestershire, UK. They are having serious financial problems and need to raise money urgently to keep the centre going as they have only enough money to pay wages for one month..
http://www.itv.com/news/central/2012-07-19/appeals-to-save-leicestershire-school-for-disabled-children/
A statement by Rosemary Conley, one of their patron's, can be found on their website at
http://www.stepscentre.org.uk/news/steps-urgently-needs-your-help.aspx
This is a sign of the hard financial times everyone is going through at the moment and perhaps other centres are in a similar position.

New publication, new information about Conductive Education
In 2011 Conductive Education Press decided to publish a book about András Pető. As the project has grown this has taken longer than originally expected but we will be be going to press very soon now.
We have been very fortunate in enjoying wonderful co-operation of Júlia Dévai and her family. Júlia has already given several reports elsewhere on working with András Pető:
Dr. Júlia Dévai (1997) The first years with Andras Peto: The birth of conductive education. Ontario March of Dimes, 1–8
Júlia Dévai (1998) Working with Andras Peto at the beginnings. ISAAC Israel, 14. 32–33
Júlia Dévai (1998) De første årene med András Pető: Fødselen til dirigert; pedagogikk. CP Bladet, 44/1. 6–10
Júlia Dévai (1999) The first years with Andras Peto: The birth of conductive education. Conductive Education News, 14/3
Now, nearly one-hundred years old, Júlia has written a fuller account A shortened version of this is published this week in another collection, in Hungarian:
ISBN 978-0-9569948-4-4
This paper reports her memories of working with Pető from 1948-1952 and is a very interesting read indeed. It can be found on pp.73-101 and is entitled:
'Egyszer volt, s ma is van: a sokarcú Pető – A konduktív nevelés kezdetei'
The full version will be published, in English and with extensive annotation, as part of the book András Pető that is soon to be published by Conductive Education Press.
See also:
http://www.conductive-world.info/2012/06/new-book.html
The book András Pető will inaugurate a new series from Conductive Education Press, 'Pető Studies'. The already established series 'Library of Conductive Education' will continue alongside this, dealing with contemporary themes.

Back to normal now!
Its been a while since I posted on this blog due to a variety of reasons.
Firstly, I have recently moved house and its taken a while to get packed up, moved and then unpacked, and that doesn't take in to account all the cleaning involved! Still, in the new house now and reasonably well sorted out.
Secondly, I have been involved in quite a bit of work to get the Peto book ready for publication. The cover now has a great design and colour, and the formatting is being done before completing the index. Hopefully the publication date will be announced soon.
Things have been fairly quiet in the world of Conductive Education. Even so, I hope to put up the next edition of Internet News at the end of this month next week.
Back to normal!

Not all doom and gloom!
In these days of financial difficulty it is good to see that some centres are hoping to expand their services and their premises. The PACE Centre in Aylesbury, Bucks (UK) is planning to acquire new premises to extend their early years services and training operation.
http://www.bucksherald.co.uk/news/local-news/pace-plan-early-years-centre-1-3805561
The local paper reports:
http://www.bucksherald.co.uk/news/local-news/pace-plan-early-years-centre-1-3805561
The local paper reports:
The centre would allow PACE to consolidate its existing Early Years services onto one site and provide expansion space in response to the continuing growth in demand for its services.
It will also provide training facilities to allow PACE staff to develop and extend their skills to similar organisations around the country
A decision by the local planning department will be made later this month.

Royal support for 8th World Conductive Education Congress
A welcome message by Princess Ursula of Bavaria has been posted on the 8th World Conductive Education Congress website expressing support for Conductive Education. She is the patron of FortSchritt in Niederpöcking and calls for the support of parents and professionals in the development of funding for training and development of Conductive Education in Germany to be expressed at the Congress in Munich and says :
The 8th World Congress on Conductive Education which will take place in Munich in 2013 – after Gothenburg and Hong Kong – is a unique chance to demonstrate presence in the public in a transnational way. We hope to increase the acceptance and to create a strong pressure group for the conductive education by panel discussions with politicians and representatives of public health insurances and cure associations.
Your personal commitment will be most important. Please take the time to visit the 8th World Congress on Conductive Education in Munich and bring in your demands as a person concerned or as parents
.
It will be interesting to see how much response this gets and how many parents and professionals do attend the confrence in October 2013. In the past these congresses have tended to include mostly people working in the field of Conductive Education, of which only a few were parents running centres and services.
A wider audience may encourage wider discussion.

As usual it contains information about the Foundation's activities, reports from the CE centres and what is going on on Conductive Education. It is good to see that conductors are very involved in the running of the organisation as well as doing their 'day jobs' .
Also included is information about the CE Awareness Week due to start on 21st May. I wish them good luck!

What happened next - nothing!
Last Wednesday I sent an email to the address that was posted in a comment made on my last blog posting re the appropriation of my Conductive Education centre lists and postings.
I have not had a reply yet, either to say she is not the person running the Conductive Education World Hungary blog, or to say that she is.
I cannot contact her via the Conductive Education World Hungary blog as clicking on the 'contact' tag brings me a pop up saying my computer is not set up to use it - I don't have Microsoft Office or Microsoft Express email. Perhaps that is why.
Very disappointing as I was hoping to hear something and respond accordingly.
Whoever you are, please do get in touch.

Conductive Education World Hungary - Flattery, cheek - or something else ?
This morning seemed just like any other before I switched my computer on and linked to Conductive World to catch up with Andrew's postings. What I found there has left me a little nonplussed and needless to say very surprised, as well as a little angry, disheartened, disappointed - and also curious.

The blog mentioned Conductive Education World Hungary at
http://www.conductive-education-world.blogspot.co.uk/
contains a lot of material from my blog which has taken considerable time and effort (and knowledge) over the years to compile. Whilst I am more than happy for people to make use of it in whatever way suits them, I would have expected, or even just hoped, that some acknowledgment would have been made on where the information came from.

Why hasn't it?
Why has it been posted in such a jumbled mess, no organisation at all?
Who has done this?
More to the point why has it been 'pirated' at all? A simple link to my blog would have been much easier and simpler to do.
Strangely enough Andrew and I had a conversation about plagarism only yesterday afternoon and agreed that as individuals there is little one can do to stop it, with acceptance and resignation all that is open to us. Copyright laws are too complicated and trying to implement them is a very expensive business. Universities, colleges and schools can penalise students for so doing, whenever they are spotted, but I (and anyone else whose work is used in this way) have no such options.
Come on konduktorba, let us know who you are and why you have done this!
In doing this you are only cheating yourself and as we have seen elsewhere cheats are usually found out in the end.

More about late blooming!
I realised after receiving a couple of enquiries that I hadn't added information about the availability of the publications I have been involved in.
Those published by Conductive Education Press can be obtained by clicking on the links to the books on the right hand side of this blog which lead to the Conductive Education Press page on Blurb's website. Copies can then be ordered. The last title is yet to be published and its publication will be announced in the near future.
For the others it will be necessary to contact the Foundation for Conductive Education to see if any copies are left and still for sale.

Late bloomer
Even though I am not usually one to blow my own trumpet, as the saying goes, I realised the other day, that I have edited and published a few books, some when I was Librarian at the Foundation for Conductive Education, and even more since I was retired. For years I had been saying that more should have been written and published on Conductive Education and somehow I have become involved in doing exactly that!
These have been:
- Setting up and editing a twice-a-year journal, Recent Advances in Conductive Education that ran from 2001 to 2009
- Co-editing and/or publishing six books plus another to be published in 2012.
See below.
Maguire, G. and Sutton, A. ed. (in press) András Pető; an introduction. Birmingham: Conductive Education Press.
Not bad going! This was not a planned career move ( nor was that retirement). It seems to have 'just happened' and will, I hope, continue..

New book coming soon
Andrew has mentioned that we are currently working on a new publication about András Pető for Conductive Education Press. This has proved to be a very interesting experience but has taken a lot longer than was originally thought - doesn't everything? The idea was first discussed back in December 2010 at the conference in Hong Kong, and this has developed into something a lot more substantial than originally thought possible. More about that later.
Here we are nearly 18 months later almost there, on the home straight - we think!
The dilemma at the moment is to come up with a title for it and I would not have believed that it could be so difficult. Suggestions have gone back and forth but no definite decision made although there are a couple of front runners.
Watch this space for more information!

New book about Conductive Education
Eine Geschichte nach einem Schlaganfall in Wort und Bild
(A post stroke story in words and pictures)
Waltraud Heussinger
Nürnberg: Conductor Nürnberg
10 euros (£8.50)
Conductor Nürnberg has just published a new book in the series Conductive Lifestyles.
A lady who had a stroke relates her experiences and explains what a difference the discovery of Conductive Education has made to her life and this book, edited and introduced by Susie Mallett, is copiously illustrated with coloured photos taken by her husband. The story is told in German with parallel English translation by Susie providing what I believe is the first book by an adult recording her experiences. It makes very interesting reading.
small66711@aol.com
with your details and she will invoice you, send me your UK address and I will post a copy to you. This will be much cheaper and quicker than sending it from Germany.
I also still have a few copies of CN's first book Tell me a Story you can purchase too see http://www.gillian-maguire.info/2011/02/let-me-tell-you-story.html
Again, email Susie re ordering and payment.

First Conductive Education Professional Education Group conference?
Tomorrow there is a conference being held for CE professionals in the North of England. I had heard rumours about this but been unable to find out any details on the Internet as CEPEG, the organisation running this conference does not appear to have a website as far as I can tell. The information I have now was posted only yesterday on the blog page of Legacy Rainbow House, the centre hosting the conference.
http://thelegacy-rainbowhouse.blogspot.com/2012/03/legacy-hosts-first-ever-cepeg.html
This states that it is the 'first ever CEPEG Conference' which is strange as I do know CEPEG have been holding conferences annually for a number of years in various locations, but this is the first in Cheshire.
No papers, presentations, programmes have ever been made public so I can't say what sort of topics are discussed or what kind of practice is reported on. As those involved in CE are thinly distributed worldwide and do not get to meet very often - the World Congress only happens every four years - it is a shame that information shared at meetings such as these is not made available to those who cannot attend. Even organisations holding conferences for members/professionals only usually publish proceedings or make information generally available.
Perhaps this will happen this time. I will keep an eye out. If anyone knows of a public source for such information, please do let me know.

BBC film on Nic Hamilton tonight
Just a quick reminder that the BBC documentary on Nic Hamilton,( brother of Lewis) who has cerebral palsy, is broadcast tonight at 10.35 on BBC1. The three others will follow over the coming weeks
Monday, 27 February 2012
Four films on disability to be shown by BBC
The BBC have announces a series of films over the coming months on disability. One of these follows the Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton's brother who has cerebral palsy and wants to be a racing driver too, and another a couple with cerebral palsy about to have their second baby.
The executive producer of the series says:
"This season is about ordinary disabled people dealing with the same everyday challenges that everyone faces – leaving home, choosing a career, raising a family."Programmes will be on BBC1 and Radio Five Live starting with Nic Hamilton on 6 March.
Its a shame that all four will be broadcast at 10.35pm and not earlier in the schedules.
